The Super Bowl LVI on February 13th was a pivotal event in American sports and equally significant for the US betting industry. Bookmakers reported a twofold increase in bets on the game between the "Los Angeles Rams" and the "Cincinnati Bengals". Canadian rapper Drake also drew special attention in the context of the Super Bowl by placing a $1.25 million wager. Through Instagram screenshots of his betting slip, it became known that Drake prefers to bet on the well-known crypto bookmaker Stake.com.
This fact, as reported by the New York Post, caught the attention of Canadian experts in the field of gambling regulation. They speculated that Drake's bets might be illegal. The issue revolves around the fact that Drake resides in the province of Ontario, where Stake.com doesn't possess a license from the state regulator for bookmaking activities.
John Holden, a business professor at the University of Oklahoma, told the New York Post that whether Drake violated Ontario's legislation or not depends on where the performer was located at the time of placing the bet.
American journalists sought comments on this matter from Drake himself and the gambling regulator of the province of Ontario. However, the rapper did not respond to the New York Post.
Ontario is set to allow online bookmakers to enter the regulated market of the province from April 4, 2022. Currently, it remains unknown whether Stake.com will be one of the platforms to receive a license.
