Mickey Hart Band Spring Tour begins in Santa Cruz – Setlist and pictures

GRATE STUFF!  Mickey’s new band is fresh from the studio, their album is coming on April 10th.  This was the first show of their tour, and they felt a little tentative… for about 45 seconds!  Then they kicked it in, opening with a rousing “Not Fade Away”.   Then most of the 1st set was filled with their new material, though since they have been playing some of these songs now since August 211, the grooves are deeper and richer than before.  The set closed with a “Fire On The Mountain” with some very fresh phrasing from Tim Hockenberry.  The band was on fire, and not even a whole pail of water could have cooled them down.

The second set opened with some of Mickey’s outer space sonifications, bringing “the sound of the Sun” to our ears and bodies… the vibes of “Heartbeat” washed over us and into us, and the 2nd set took us all on a deeper voyage.   Again, mostly new grooves, with a very different “The Other One” in the middle, with Dave Schools dropping the bombs on us!  The set wrapped up with “Going Down The Road Feeling Bad” > a sweet sing along “And We Bid You Goodnight”.  Gawain Matthews gave us some thrilling lead guitar all night, and his riffs on this last number were gorgeous.

Two debuts (for this band) for the encore, “Franklin’s Tower”, and a touching “Stella Blue” sung by Crystal Hall to close the show.

What I love with this band is that they are doing something different.   Mostly new songs, mostly with Robert hunter lyrics.  Enough Dead tunes to keep it friendly, but even those have a whole new way of sounding.   The Mickey Hart Band is a very fresh and innovative group, shedding some new light, dusting off the rust, and making it shine!

Greetings from The String Cheese Incident Headquarters….the management team has been hard at work, racking our brains to try and come up with a couple of new and creative ideas for the Barefoot Boys that will properly capture the feeling of excitement we all get when we look ahead to Summer 2012….we came up with a massive list of ideas that ranged from shooting Billy out of a cannon to having Kyle brew up a pool full of Summer Ale and inviting all of Boulder over for a swim….unfortunately many of these ideas proved to either be prohibitively expensive, logistically impossible or just downright dumb….however, we are pleased to report that we did come up with a couple that we wanted to share with everyone.

First, the most exciting thing we have seen sweep across the cultural landscape in the last couple of months has been the mania induced by New York Knick point guard Jeremy Lin….As Mr. Lin is often referred to by the global media as “the Michael Kang of Basketball” we felt that it was only fair for us to return the favor.  Therefore, from this moment forth, the band will now be known as The String Cheese Lincident…. Not only are we thrilled by the obvious media boost this will provide for the band but think of the merch possibilities….Lincredible!!

The second idea we are going to roll out this summer is one that we have actually been working on for a very long time.  Way back in the summer of 2003, the band filed a lawsuit in Federal Court against Ticketmaster. The basic gist of the lawsuit was that the band wanted to maintain the ability to sell a large amount of tickets directly to the fans with the intention of keeping the service charge as reasonable as possible.  Some very pointed discussions took place, the issue was resolved and the band continued selling tickets as they had always done.  Fast forward to today and pay attention….this is the exciting part….The String Cheese Incident is proud to announce that we have figured out a way to finally achieve the ultimate goal with this whole ticketing exercise! Every ticket bought through SCI Ticketing will be SERVICE FEE FREE! That’s right….if you order tix thru the band’s website there will be no service charge add-ons aside from shipping (which is out of our hands)….the ticket price that is listed is the price that you will pay.  The band is going to cover the credit card fee….the band is going to cover the cost to take the orders and fulfill the tickets…..the cost of a $49.95 ticket to Red Rocks will cost you $49.95……the cost of a $49.95 ticket to the Greek will cost you $49.95…..a $239 ticket to Horning’s will be $49.95…just kidding, it will actually be $239….that’s it….super simple. We’ve got a big batch of tickets to sell but the supply is not limitless….get ‘em while you can!

The venues that the band will be visiting this summer have been chosen with lots of love and care….they are all epic and we couldn’t be more psyched to get out on the road.

GRATEFUL to SCI for this!!!  Good work boys.
