For some reason the Grateful Dead musical exploration traditionally in the mid part of the 2nd set, Drums and Space is one of those things that polarizes opinion…. like licorice. You know, not everybody likes licorice, but people who like licorice REALLY like licorice…

For some, it is the cosmic musical deep dive peak experience that they were hoping for, and building toward with every spin and twist and arm flail, all show long….

And some people just don’t like it. Picky Deadheads,

In the last two days I have seen a few online permutations of the age-old Deadhead debate:

A) Is Drums and Space like the coolest part of the show, (at least, y’know, like totally only on a good night, when Mickey and Billy and the audience are one big shamanic heartbeat, and Jerry sneaks in and, then the magic happens… )

or

B) Time to go pee and/or get a beer and a hot dog, step out for a smoke, call your bookie/dealer/broker/spouse whatever…

BTW remember lines at Pay Phones during drums, back before we all had Star Trek in our pockets?

Do you enjoy Drums and Space? Did you dig it back then? Do you have to be enjoying an enhanced experience to really get it?

What about now, are you glad Dead and Company brought it back to the setlist? Do you love or hate it now?

Do you totally focus in and let your mind trip out with all the visual stimulation on the screen? Is Jonathan Singer a good enough drug for modern times? Westside Life!

Or…
Do you get in line for a beer, and since you are waiting you pull the Star Trek out of your pocket to call your mom/spouse/dealer/broker/lawyer…. but then you notice a link a friend shared, and get distracted watching some of Johnathan Singer’s visuals on your phone…. Yeah, I thought that was you. The guy at the counter is trying to get your attention. NEXT!
