Andrew Huberman, Ph.D., is a neuroscientist and tenured professor in the department of neurobiology and by courtesy, psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Stanford School of Medicine.  He is also the host of the extremely popular Huberman Lab Podcast.

Rick Rubin is one of the most renowned music producers of all time, known for his work with a wide range of artists.

Confession, I am a regular listener of this show. Andrew Huberman mentions his love of music on his podcast often, he is into 2nd wave punk and hardcore bands, and is a big fan of Joe Strummer. He has also said how the Dead & jambands are not his thing really, though he has had exposure.

In this episode, when Rick Rubin brings up the magic of the Grateful Dead and how their live shows are more interesting than their studio work (most Heads agree!) Andrew admits to having been to a few Grateful Dead concerts as a kid, going with his older sister, though he seems to have gotten lost in Space! Rubin is not a big Deadhead either, though you can tell by his enthusiasm his appreciation is real.

Enjoy this clip where they discuss the Magic of the Grateful Dead!

Almost always, the guests on Huberman are other Ph.D. research scientists, and each episode is densely packed with information and science based facts about neurobiology, nutrition, health, and fitness, as well as practical ways to apply the findings.

Rick Rubin is brilliant, but not a a scientist. Dr. Huberman has the utmost respect for Rubin and his thoughts, and this conversation takes some fun twists and turns as they delve into processes and concepts of creativity. Here is the full episode:
